Obituary for Constance Eileen Allen
Constance Eileen Allen left this life on Sunday afternoon, October 2, 2011. She died in her own bedroom at the family farm where she and her husband Robert (Bob) raised their family. Eileen was surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren for over two weeks after she became weak enough that she was confined to her bed, and family watched over her closely and lovingly until she passed. Eileen was born on July 21, 1923 to Pearl Hooe of Newman. She never knew her father and while still a toddler, Eileen’s mother moved to Detroit and left Eileen to be raised by Sherman and Armajetta Hooe, her maternal grandparents. At the age of 10, Eileen’s grandmother died and she assumed the role of homemaker for her grandfather and herself. Eileen attended Newman High School, where she met the man destined to be her mate for life. Bob Allen was a handsome, strapping farm boy and football hero and Eileen was his cheerleading sweetheart. The couple both graduated with the NHS Class of 1941. They were married in Old Monroe, Missouri, on November 1, 1941. Bob entered service with the U.S. Army in 1943, and he and Eileen lived in California throughout the duration of WWII. Upon returning home, the couple lived in Newman for nearly four years until they were afforded the opportunity to move back to the Allen family farm with Bob’s widowed father. From that time forward, Eileen worked as a farm wife on a traditional farm, with all of both the blessings and challenges that attend the farm life. Bob preceded Eileen in death in 2001. Eileen gave birth to five children: Connie Underwood (husband Gale) of Villa Grove, Steve Allen (wife Dee) of Newman, Becky Robinson (husband John) of Villa Grove, Jim Allen (wife Nancy) of Newman, and Douglas Earl Allen, who died at birth. She leaves behind 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, all of whom were close to this loving woman. Eileen was a faithful member of Wesley Chapel Church and served as a Sunday School teacher and church treasurer there for many years. She was a member of the Wesley Chapel Women’s Club and the Newman American Legion Auxiliary throughout her adult life and served in several offices in both organizations. Eileen sold Avon products for 43 years, and as the years passed, the family learned that she would often use her time as a sales representative to visit elderly ladies and provide them with company and comfort as part of her own private little ministry in Newman. Such selfless and quiet service was typical of Eileen. She was a very giving person with a heart for others, and her Christian faith was the center of her character. Eileen and her children and grandchildren had only recently celebrated being blessed with a heritage of living on a farm that has been in the same family for 175 years. She has served as a wonderful caretaker of that heritage, and has made the transition for her family a beautiful experience. The world was a better place for her having visited it for 88 years. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Krabel Funeral Home in Oakland. Funeral Services will be held Friday, October 7, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Wesley Chapel Church in rural Newman. Burial will follow in Albin Cemetery. For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Wesley Chapel Missions Fund in care of the funeral home.
