Obituary for Earnest "Rich" Gilkerson, Jr.
Earnest Richard “Rich” Gilkerson, Jr., age 71 of Metcalf, IL, passed away on Monday, November 11, 2019 at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, IN. Rich was born March 26, 1948, the son of Earnest Richard “Ernie” Gilkerson, Sr. and Frances Louise Scott Gilkerson.
Rich was a lifelong resident of Metcalf. He graduated from Young America High School and worked for many years at Mooney Motors Ford dealership in Chrisman.
He loved to race and rebuild cars and motorcycles, and was especially fond of his 1948 Ford truck, which was affectionately known as “The Gray Ghost.” Rich could often be found with a beverage, talking on his CB radio, loading ammunition, or tinkering in his garage.
As a child, Rich loved to spend time with his Grandpa Scott in Oakland, and he enjoyed hanging out at stock car races. Rich and his mom, Frances, shared many mischievous moments, and could spin a great story.
Rich is survived by his two daughters: Tina (Fred) Queary of Midland, MI; and Melinda “Mindy” Jones of North Liberty, IA; and six grandchildren: Josie Queary, Jenna Palmer, Charis Queary, Francesca Queary, Courtney Jones, and Nathan Jones; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
Rich requested that no funeral services be held. A private family burial will take place at a future date. The family wishes to thank those who cared for Rich during his time at Newman Rehabilitation Center, as well as those who visited him.
Online condolences may be left at www.krabelfuneralhome.com.
