Obituary for Carl Rex House
Carl Rex House, age 91, of Oakland, IL, went home to be with the Lord, surrounded by his family on Thursday, August 14, 2014 at the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home in Mattoon, IL.
Rex was born March 16, 1923 in Oakland, IL to Roy and Leota (Swinford) House. He married Garnett Nadine Hawkins on June 23, 1948 in Oakland, IL. He served in the US Army during WWII and participated in the landing at Normandy on D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge. He was self-employed for many years as the owner of a school bus transportation service and worked for ten years at USI in Tuscola before his retirement. Rex was a member of the Oakland V.F.W. Post #3637 and the Oakland Masonic Lodge. He loved spending time with his friends and family, and also enjoyed playing checkers, watching the Cubs, Bears and Illini on television, fishing, trap shooting, mushroom hunting, and listening to Tri-County sports on the radio.
He is survived by two sons: Steve House of Charleston, IL and Mark House (Michele Quick) of Tuscola, IL; a brother: Max (Millie) House of Russellville, KY; a sister: Charlene (Earl) Cole of Pensacola, FL; three grandchildren: Josh Lange (Rachel Buckler) of Tuscola, IL, Derek (Jessica) Quick of Columbia, MO and Megan Quick of Tuscola, IL; a great-granddaughter: Madison Lange of Tuscola, IL; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 18, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. at Krabel Funeral Home in Oakland, IL. Visitation will be held for two hours prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Camp New Hope in care of the funeral home.
