Beverly “Bev” Ann (Moore) Frailey, 87, passed away on Monday, February 5, 2024, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL with her family by her side. The oldest of three daughters, Bev was born October 23, 1936, in Fairbury, IL to Ralph D. and Virginia B. (Mann) Moore.
Bev graduated from Ramsey High School in 1954 and attended Eastern Illinois University for two years, before marrying and starting a family. Bev raised four children in Chrisman with her husband of 20 years, Dr. K. W. Frailey, DVM.
Bev’s love for children and books led her to work as an assistant librarian at Chrisman Elementary School, before returning to EIU to pursue a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. Following her 1974 graduation from Eastern, Bev was employed as the elementary school librarian for the Jamaica School District in Vermilion County for nearly a decade.
Bev completed a master’s degree in Library Science at the University of Illinois in 1985. She worked at numerous libraries, including Park Ridge Public Library and National Lewis University in Lisle IL. In 1989 she accepted a position as Assistant Professor, Instructional Services Librarian and Coordinator for the Foundation Center at Brookens Library at Sangamon State University (later University of Illinois Springfield), where she worked until her retirement in 2005.
One of Bev’s life-long passions was singing. As a member of the Melvin Girls 4-H Club in the early 1950s, she was part of the award-winning all-female vocal sextet, the Cloverettes. Performing at various local county fairs and events, as well as on radio and TV, the Cloverettes won many competitions, including first place at the IL State Fair and on Chicago’s Morris B. Sachs TV Show in 1953. As a member of the United Methodist Church, she sang in the choir during her years in Chrisman and later in Park Ridge and Springfield. Bev joined the Danville Sweet Adelines and enjoyed keeping up with her Sweet Adeline friends, even as she moved throughout Illinois.
Among Bev’s many interests were cooking, herb gardening, dining out, history, nature, needle arts, folk music and storytelling festivals, as well as performing arts events. Bev rarely missed a chance to check out a local art fair or exhibit and enjoyed visiting herb gardens with her sister Jan. She volunteered at the Brookfield Zoo, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, the Illinois Audubon Society, and many other community organizations.
Bev was a wonderful listener and always enjoyed learning about people’s lives. She was blessed with many lifelong friends. She loved animals of all sorts and shared her life with a number of cats over the years. Cuddle Kitty was Bev’s constant companion during the past four years and misses her dearly.
Bev loved nothing more than being a mom and gram to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a loving and caring mother who always put her children first and cherished her time with them. Bev particularly enjoyed visiting her children and being a part of their lives, whether at museums, theater performances, picnics, dance recitals, motorcycle races, music concerts, or sports activities. Later in life, Bev moved to Southern Illinois to be close to her daughter Karen and son-in-law John, where she lived until 2020.
Bev is survived by her four children: Karen Frailey (John Wallace), Simpson, IL; Douglas Frailey (Stacey), Westfield, IN; Susan Frailey Broxham (Phil), Elgin, IL; David Frailey (Tami), Marshall, IL.
Beverly is also survived by eight grandchildren: Rachel (Nick) Hale, Myrtle Beach, SC; Benjamin Frailey, Lafayette, IN; Mason Broxham, New York City; Eli Broxham, Nashville, TN; Shannon (Lacey) Frailey, Chrisman, IL; Travis Frailey, Chrisman, IL; Halley Frailey and Jeremy Frailey, Marshall, IL; and 3 great grandchildren: Emmett and Etta Frailey and Elizabeth Hale. She is survived by her youngest sister Janice E. (Moore) Schnurr, Herscher, IL; as well as five nieces and nephews.
Bev was preceded in death by her parents, sister Mary Kay (Moore) Bridges and beloved granddaughter Aubrie Anna Broxham.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Goldwater Care, Danville, who took such loving care of Beverly during her time there. Special gratitude is also expressed for Bev’s caregivers in Southern Illinois, who showered her with love.
A Celebration of Life open-house for Beverly will be held Sunday, March 24, 12-3 PM, in the library at Allerton Mansion, Allerton Park & Retreat Center, 515 Old Timber Road, Monticello, Illinois 61856. A short service is planned at 2 PM, where family and friends are invited to share their memories. Light food and beverages will be served. A private burial at Belmont Cemetery, Watseka, IL will be held at a later date.
