Wayne Lee Abitz, age 79, of Oakland, IL, died Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at his home.
Wayne was born July 6, 1944, in Wausau, WI, to Lyle and Margareth (Wolfe) Abitz. He married Shirley Kay Thomas on March 19, 1966, in Peoria, IL. She preceded him in death in 2017.
Wayne is survived by his children: Wayne Lee Abitz Jr. (Suzie), Maureen Ritchie (Bob Diel), Chad Abitz (Jessica), Candy Lynn Canull (Mike Davis), Krystal Lang (Brian), Windi Abitz (Ryan Atteberry), Clint Abitz (Bridgette Patraw), Tony Abitz, and Bubba Abitz (Kimberly Creek); a daughter-in-law: Faith Abitz; his mother-in-law: Reba Thomas; siblings: Cathy Coscio (Marcelo), Lyle Abitz (Margaret), Carole Abitz, Mark Abitz, Doug Abitz (Diane) Dean Abitz (Kathy), Diane Reynolds (Clyde) and Sharon Williams (Willi); twenty-six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren, plus one on the way.
He was also preceded in death by a son: Lloyd Abitz.
Wayne was a veteran of the United States Army. He retired from the Coles County Sheriffs Department. He also worked as a security officer at Sarah Bush Lincoln Healthcare Center, as a farmhand, and at Young Radiator, Blaw Knox, Columbia Machine, and Tomasino’s Pizza. He was a member of the American Legion, the V.F. W., and the Fraternal Order of Police. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. at Krabel Funeral Home in Oakland, IL. Visitation will be held for two hours prior to the service, beginning at 5:00 p.m. Military rites will be performed at 6:00 p.m. The family requests casual attire. For those who wish, memorials may be made in Wayne’s honor to the Oakland Food Pantry.
