Shirley Kay “Big Momma” (Thomas) Abitz, age 72, passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at Carle Foundation Hospital.
Shirley was born August 29, 1944 in Tuscola, IL to Glenn Clayton Thomas, Jr. and Reba Kathleen (Miller) Thomas. She married Wayne Lee Abitz on March 19, 1966 in Peoria, IL. She was a homemaker, and loved caring for her large family and spending time with her many friends. She also enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, sewing, and knitting.
She is survived by her husband: Wayne Abitz; her mother: Reba Thomas; ten children: Wayne Lee Abitz, Jr. (Suzie), Maureen Ritchie (Bob Diel), Chad Abitz (Jessica), Lloyd Abitz (Faith), Candy Lynn Helmuth (Joe), Krystal Lang (Brian), Windi Abitz, Clint Abitz (Amy Wolc), Tony Abitz (Julie), and Bubba Abitz (Kimberly Creek); two brothers: Bill Thomas (Kathy) and Bob Thomas (Lora); twenty-six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father and one grandson: Oliver Sefried.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 26, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Krabel Funeral Home in Oakland. The family encourages casual attire. For those who wish, memorials may be made in Shirley’s honor to the Power Pak Program.
