Obituary for Shirley Fern Anderson
Shirley Fern (Hughes) Anderson, age 78 of Charleston, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 9, 2011 at her home. Shirley was born November 21, 1932 at Pleasanton, KS to Thomas Austin Hughes and Emma Irene Abby Hughes. She married Doyle Anderson on June 30, 1951 at Hindsboro, IL; he survives. She is also survived by a son, Mike (Kathleen) Anderson of Hindsboro, IL; two daughters, Bonnie Kile of Tuscola, IL and Terri (Jim) Hopper of Collison, IL; two sisters, Hazel Nye of Edmonds, WA and Peggy Johnston of Champaign, IL; her mother-in-law, Marguerite Anderson of Charleston, IL; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one sister, her father-in-law and one son-in-law. Shirley was a member of the Hindsboro United Methodist Church, Republican Women, United Methodist Women, Bunco Club and served as an election judge for many years. She was fortunate to work several years side by side with her son-in-law, Greg Kile at Fox Ridge State Park, where she developed an avid love of nature. That love of nature carried over to home where she would bring every stray dog or cat and give it a new loving home. She loved the outdoors, and was most content when mowing, gardening or tending to her flowers. She also loved her beloved St. Louis Cardinals, and was never afraid to offer her opinion or managerial advice. She loved her kids and all of her grandkids, and was like a kid magnet when around little ones. She was often found sitting on the floor in the middle of a group of 3-4 year olds, playing whatever they asked her to play. She was loved by her entire family, and was a great role model to all who knew her. She will leave a void in the hearts of all who loved her as she moves on to that next big yard and garden to tend to. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2011 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Krabel Funeral Home in Oakland. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 13, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Van Voorhis Cemetery. For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Hindsboro United Methodist Church.
