Obituary for Robert C. Lance
After battling several years of health challenges spiritedly and doggedly, Bob Lance died peacefully at Carle Hospital late on December 29, 2014. Bob was born on August 3, 1952 to Cyrus and Mary (Cox) Lance at Jarman Hospital, Tuscola, Illinois.
Bob attended Hindsboro Grade School and graduated from Oakland High School in 1970. In high school, he worked at the Brocton elevator part-time. During his life, Bob held various jobs but working at grain elevators dominated. He worked many years for ADM, later Cargill. Farmers in the Filson, Hindsboro, and Brocton area came to know him well.
To capture Bob in words – colorful, loyal, funny, moody, sincere, out-spoken, loving, lovable, sometimes ornery . . . a complicated man: defined by the simplicity of his bibs, punctuated by his oft unruly beard, revealed in his kindness and generosity, affirmed in his friendships, seasoned by the difficulties he resolved and those he did not, strengthened in his religious belief, sustained in his sobriety, celebrated in his children’s love.
He often said during moments of his greatest health challenges: “When the Lord is ready for me, I’m ready to go.” The Lord called, and Bob went.
Bob is survived by his son, Justin Lance, his daughter Autumn St. Clair (Todd), and their mother, Pam Kanitz; daughters, Mandy Welch, Rachel Rushing (Josh), Mary Dickson (Tony), Olivia Lance; sons, David Roberts, Bobby Lance, Tommy Lance and their mother, Rhonda K. Roberts-Lance; his grandchildren, James Welch, August and Brayton St. Clair, Keyton Lance, and Rhett Rushing. He is also survived by his sister, Elaine Kunz (Tom) and brother, Clarence Lance (Teresa) and nephews, Bill Lance, Blake Lance, and niece, Kim Romine (Jeff).
Bob’s parents and two nephews, Rob and Jamie Kunz, preceded him in death.
Visitation will be held Friday, January 2, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Krabel Funeral Home in Oakland. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Payne Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends may honor Bob with contributions to a trust fund for his grandchildren, in care of the Edgar County Bank and Trust.
