Miriam Slemmons, 97, passed away Saturday, March 25th in Houston, Texas. Miriam Slemmons was born March 26, 1925, the elder daughter of Chester Lycan Slemmons and Winifred Hoult Slemmons. She was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy S. Rogers. Miriam is survived by two nephews, George and Carol Rogers and Steve Rogers and Terri Beals, and their children and grandchildren.
Miriam graduated from Chrisman High School in 1942 and the University of Colorado in 1946. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega. She taught English in Pueblo, Colorado, Baker, Oregon, and Niles, Michigan to high school students.
In 1953, she moved to Houston, Texas and was employed by Humble Oil and Refining Company. She retired in 1986 from what is now Exxon Mobil. She maintained current relationships with her colleagues as a member of the “Exxon Lunch Bunch.”
She will join the family and be the fifth generation to be buried in the Hoult Cemetery, south of Chrisman, Illinois near her family home where she was raised.
Miriam travelled extensively in her life. She visited every continent except Antarctica. She particularly enjoyed travelling by train across Canada, Australia, and Russia on the Trans-Siberian railroad. One of her favorite destinations was the pyramids in Egypt and the ancient archeological sites in Turkey and Greece.
Miriam was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and attended the Randy Smith Adult Bible Class and participated in a prayer and healing ministry there. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Hoult Cemetery in Chrisman, IL. Online condolences may be left at www.krabelfuneralhome.com
