Obituary for Merna Combs
Merna Combs, age 87, of Oakland, IL, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 7, 2018. Merna was born September 12, 1930 to Brian and Cecil (Fitzpatrick) Lee. She married Floyd Elmer Combs, he preceded her in death. Merna was a member of the Salisbury Church in Hutton, IL, and the Coles County Historical Society, and was instrumental in helping to save the Five Mile House south of Charleston. She enjoyed playing Pinochle with her brother Ralph above the store in Hutton, and had many hobbies and interests, including yodeling and singing on the radio, square dancing, cooking and reading. She was passionate about genealogy, and amassed a detailed history of the Sargent and Fitzpatrick lineage. She had a great love for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her many friends. Merna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers and one sister. She is survived by three children: Les (Darla) Combs of Charleston, IL; Aron Combs of Kansas, IL; and Arlin Combs of Casey, IL; one brother: Lester (Alpha) Lee of Charleston, IL; three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Saturday, August 11, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Krabel Funeral Home in Oakland, IL. A graveside funeral will follow at Liberty Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Five Mile House Foundation.
