Merl E. Hixon, age 71 of Chrisman, IL passed away at his favorite place, Fairmount Quarry, on Tuesday, May 26, 2015.
Merl was born on May 4, 1944 in Danville, IL to Carl and Pauline (Clark) Hixon. He married Betty Lou (Fritz) Handy on July 6, 1991 in Chrisman. A lifelong resident of the Chrisman area, Merl was a member of the Bloomfield Masonic Lodge #148, Edgar County Shrine Club, and the Chrisman American Legion Post #477. He loved his grandkids and NASCAR. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and having a beer with friends. He also enjoyed being an umpire and referee.
He is survived by his wife Betty; his children: Angie Pate of Metamora, IL, Lisa (Joe) Heaser of Bloomington, IL, Tom (Crystal) Vire of Georgetown, IL, Charles (Kari) Vire of Georgetown, IL, and Kelly (Sue) Handy of Chrisman, IL; his grandchildren: Madison Pate, Logan, Taylor, and Jenna Heaser, Chase and Kori Vire, and Beth and Keira Vire; several nieces and nephews; two great-nephews and a great-niece. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, a brother, and a niece.
Visitation will be held at Krabel Funeral Home in Chrisman, IL on Sunday, May 31, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with Masonic rites to follow. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 1, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Krabel Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Hoult Cemetery, with military honors provided by the Chrisman American Legion Post #477. For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital in St. Louis.
