Obituary for Martha Hawkins
Martha Lou (Coartney) Hawkins, age 75 of Oakland, died Monday, July 16, 2012 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. Martha was born January 16, 1937 in Ashmore Township, Coles County to Harvey Wayne and Mary Jane (Wright) Coartney. She married Robert Clinton Hawkins on January 6, 1957 at the Enon Baptist Church in Ashmore. She was a lifelong resident of Oakland, and was committed to serving her community throughout her lifetime. Martha was a member and past president of the Oakland Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Oakland Women’s Club, a member of Antioch Separate Baptist Church since 1958, ran the Oakland Pool for four years, and was instrumental in starting the city-wide yard sales. She also owned Martha’s MAB store in Oakland, providing the community with a wide variety of services and would have celebrated her 40th year in business this October. She was a devoted fan of Oakland school sports and enjoyed watching games. She also enjoyed reading, playing video games and making others laugh with her wonderful sense of humor. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and family. Martha is survived by her husband of 55 years, Bob Hawkins of Oakland; three children: Kathy (Joe) Pardi of Oakland, Ronnie (Patty) Hawkins of Oakland and Linda (Cliff) Campbell of Charleston; two brothers, Ronald (Donna ) Coartney of Charleston and Jimmy (Janice) Coartney of Floyd, VA; a sister, Janice Freeland of Champaign; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Mary Wanda Thompson and a brother-in-law, Ken Freeland. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 19, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Krabel Funeral Home in Oakland. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 20, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery. For those who wish, memorials may be made to Antioch Separate Baptist Church, Oakland Swimming Pool or Oakland-Hindsboro Charitable Foundation in care of the funeral home.
