Obituary for Kathryn Mae Lutz
Kathryn Mae (Dodds) Lutz, age 92, of Charleston, and formerly Oakland, died Friday, September 3, 2010 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon, Illinois. She was born August 19, 1918 in Charleston, Illinois to Robert Elmer and Mae (Lenau) Dodds. She married John Frederick Lutz on May 3, 1942 in Charleston, Illinois, and he preceded her in death in 1995. Mrs. Lutz retired in 1978 after a twenty-two year teaching career. In the early 40’s she taught at Boneset, Mullen, Bunker Hill, Eversole and Arcola High School. She also taught in Texas and Georgia while her husband was in the Army. In 1963, she returned to teaching. For two years she taught fifth grade at Vance Elementary School in Paris. Until her retirement she taught fifth grade at Hindsboro Grade School and Lake Crest Elementary School in Oakland. Mrs. Lutz was very active in many civic, professional and religious organizations, including the Hindsboro Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Coles County Retired Teachers, Hindsboro Home Extension Unit, 50 year charter member of the Jolly Friendship Club, Cunningham Children’s Home board member, Oakland Memorial Library volunteer and Charleston Civic Association. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, quilting and reading, and was an avid collector of elephant memorabilia. She loved spending time with her friends, family and grandchildren. She is survived by one son, John (Kate) Lutz of Oakland, IL; three daughters, Marclyn Delgado of Charleston, Patricia (Mark) Eadie of Arcola, IL and Marjorie (Jim) Phelps of Charleston, IL; eleven granddaughters, eighteen great grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, ten step-great grandchildren and two step great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother, W. Wayne Dodds, and one son-in-law, George Delgado. Visitation will be held on Monday, September 6, 2010, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Krabel Funeral Home in Oakland. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 7 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home, with burial to follow at Union Cemetery. For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Oakland Public Library.
