James Leonard (Jim) Ash, aged 89, passed away on April 5, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on January 9, 1935, in Danville, IL, Jim was the beloved son of Russell and Mary Ash. A proud graduate of Newman High School, Class of 1953, he went on to serve his country with distinction in the Navy Reserves for two decades.
Jim's life was enriched by his loving marriage to Judith (Judy) Henry, who predeceased him. They were married on September 2, 1960, at the First Baptist Church in Chrisman, IL. Together, they raised two devoted sons, Duane (Donelle) of Farmer City, IL, and Rodney (Colleen) of Danville, IL, and cherished their three adored grandchildren, Gavin, Jessica, and Amanda. He was also predeceased by his grandson, Dillion Russell.
A dedicated sheet metal worker, Jim's career at Danville Metal Stamping spanned an impressive six decades, from 1960 until his retirement in 2020. His commitment to excellence was evident in both his work and his personal pursuits.
Jim is survived by his siblings Gilbert (Sue) of Broadlands, IL; Katherine Vosburg of Parrish, FL; David of Urbana, IL; Dorothy Deal of St. Pete, FL; Elizabeth (Ron) Crouse of Auburn, KY; Elaine (Joe) Porter of Metcalf, IL; Edward (Kaye) of Hume, IL; and Linda Witt of Hume, IL. He was preceded in death by his siblings Robert, Wanda, and Joseph (Linda).
The family would also like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Roberta, Jim's special caregiver, whose unwavering support and dedication brought him great comfort over the last three years and final days.
A passionate gardener, Jim's meticulously maintained yard and vibrant garden were the envy of the neighborhood. His love for country music and line dancing brought joy to many, as did his unwavering support for the Illini and the St. Louis Cardinals. Jim's intellectual curiosity shone through in his enjoyment of Sudoku puzzles and his passion for bird watching. Known for his friendly smile and easygoing nature, Jim always had a kind word for everyone he met. A friend to all creatures, Jim had a special place in his heart for dogs, often finding solace and joy in their companionship.
In accordance with Jim's wishes, there will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held to honor his memory on Friday, April 12th at 11:00 AM at Young America Cemetery in Hume, IL.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Vermilion County Animal Shelter or the charity of your choice, to honor Jim's love for animals and his generous spirit.
