Obituary for Helen M. Hanner
Helen M. Hanner, 93, of Oakland, passed away at 1:00 AM on Saturday, November 22 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 25 at the Krabel Funeral Home in Oakland from 6:00-8:00 PM with services following on Wednesday, November 26 at 10:30 AM. Burial will be at the Oakland Cemetery. Rev. Walter Miller of the Oakland United Methodist Church will officiate.
Helen was born February 5, 1921 in Casey, IL, the daughter of James H. and Maude (Gross) Davis. On January 15, 1940 she married Howard Hanner of Oakland. They shared 69 years together before his death in 2009.
Most of her married life was spent caring for her husband and family at home. For a few years she worked at the Charleston Community Hospital and then at Eastern Illinois University, retiring in 1975. Helen was a member of the Oakland United Methodist Church were she was active in the United Methodist Women's Fellowship. She was a member of the State University and EIU Annuitants Associations. She also was active at the Oakland Senior Center for many years. She did not like to be idle and spent many hours gardening and then canning or freezing the produce. She enjoyed fishing with her husband and they spent many summer vacations in WI, MN, and Canada over the years. In her later years, she liked to keep busy painting with oils, doing crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, working with plastic canvas, and crocheting. She will be remembered as a caring, generous lady who loved her family unconditionally and she will greatly missed by her family and friends.
Memorials may be made to the Oakland United Methodist Church or the Oakland Senior Center.
The family thanks Cathy Berlin, Helen’s caregiver for the past year, as well as the staff, nurses and care partners of 4E at SBLHC for the compassionate care of their mother and them.
