Obituary for Gene Austin Ogden
Gene Austin Ogden, age 97, of Oakland, IL, left this life on Monday, August 4, 2014 at Hilltop Convalescent Center in Charleston, IL.
Gene was born June 10, 1917 in Edgar County, IL to James Madison and Eva (Austin) Ogden. He married Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Daniels on April 20, 1939 in Paris, IL. He farmed most of his life and was a member of the Paris Presbyterian Church. He served as president of the Oakland School Board, president of Edgar Conservation District, a member of the Edgar County Farm Bureau, a member of the Oakland Masonic Lodge, a 32nd degree member of the Danville Consistory and a Worthy Patron of Oakland Eastern Star. He liked to listen to Glenn Miller and all the big bands of the 30s and 40s. He enjoyed photography of old barns, flowers and his hummingbirds. He was a family man that loved his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. He was devoted to his wife of 63 years and cared for her at home as she struggled with Parkinson’s disease for 19 years.
He is survived by two sons: James A. (Rhonda) Ogden of Isabel, IL and Robert I. Ogden of Maidens, VA; nine grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ogden, a sister, Geneta Honn, and his parents.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 7, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Krabel Funeral Home in Oakland. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Embarrass Cemetery. For those who wish, memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation in care of the funeral home.
