Obituary for Ernest Orion Baker
Ernest O. Baker, age 90 of Oakland, passed away at 4:00 AM, Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at Cambridge Health and Rehabilitation Center in Richmond, Texas. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, August 24 at Standard Funeral Home in Oakland, with Reverend Bill Boaz officiating. Burial will be at Rose Lawn Cemetery in Charleston. Friends may call after noon on Sunday, August 23 at Standard Funeral Home in Oakland, where the family will be present for visitation from 4:00 to 6:00 PM Sunday evening. Ernest Orion Baker was born on March 28, 1919 in Coles County, Illinois, the son of James O. and Lillie E. Lee Baker. He was educated in several country schools. On July 2, 1948 he married Martha Girtrue Baker in Paris, IL, and she preceded him in death on June 7, 2005. Survivors include one daughter, Wanda Burkett and husband Daniel of Richmond, Texas; two granddaughters, Laura Ann Burkett and Amanda Lee Burkett; one sister, Lillie Mae Weber and husband Robert of Ashmore; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, one infant daughter Carol Ann, one brother, and three sisters. Ernie had been a farmer all of his life. He was a member of the Oakland United Methodist Church. A memorial fund is being established for the Coles County American Cancer Society.
