Obituary for Doris Compton
Doris Steinhauer Compton passed away December 16, 2011 in Hurricane, Utah. She was born October 19, 1927 at home on the Sumneytown Pike of Upper Gwynedd, Pennsylvania. She was the first of five children of John Steinhauer Jr. and Katherine Bloom Steinhauer. Doris graduated from Sell-Perk High School in 1945 and then attended West Chester State Teachers College in West Chester, Pennsylvania. She graduated form West Chester on 1949 with a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education. After graduation, she took a position in Sellersville Elementary School teaching first, second and third grades. She taught there for four years. Doris Then taught four years at Forest Elementary School in Forest Hills. Maryland and 34 years in Chrisman, Illinois at Chrisman Elementary School. During her 34 years as a first and second grade teacher at Chrisman, Doris touched the lives of many children through warmth and compassion. Coming to school and helping the children became Doris’ whole reason for being. After retiring, she continued to come to school each day as a tutor for children needing extra help. Doris continuing dedication to education gave these students the extra help they needed to be successful. During these years, Doris remained an important member of the Chrisman Elementary staff. Eating lunch with the teachers was a highlight of the day for both Doris and the teachers. On June 14, 1958, Doris and Donald Lee Compton, a well known area farmer and lifelong resident of Edgar County, were married in Danville, Illinois. They resided in Chrisman. Doris and Don were members of the Chrisman Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. She served on the Chrisman Library Board from 1991 to 2008 and read to the children during story time for several years. Doris lived in Hurricane, Utah for the past year and half with her sister Kathryn Yoder. She will be buried in Chrisman, Illinois next to her husband, Don. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Don; her parents; and brothers, Robert and Albert Steinhauer. She is survived by her two sisters, Naomi Steinhauer Halvorson of Kapolei, Hawaii and Kathryn Steinhauer Yoder of Hurricane, Utah; 14 nephews; and 7 nieces. Visitation will be held Thursday, December 22 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at The Chrisman First Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 22 at 1:00 p.m. at The Chrisman First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Hoult Cemetery. For those who wish, memorials may be made to The Chrisman First Baptist Church or the Chrisman Public Library in care of the funeral home.
