Obituary for Donald Ray Douglas
Donald Ray Douglas, age 90, of Hindsboro, IL passed away on Thursday, September 11, 2014 at his home.
Don was born January 24, 1924 in Hume, IL to Ray Eli and Jessie Helen (Vandeventer) Douglas. He married Margaret June Willoughby on February 28, 1950 in Arcola, IL; she survives.
He is also survived by three children: Kathy (Paul) Raymond of St. Charles, IL, Kent (Peg) Douglas of Hindsboro, IL and Kimberly (David) Hancock of Geneva, IL; three brothers: Dale (Phyllis) Douglas of Indianapolis, IN, Ned (Phyllis) Douglas of Hindsboro, IL and Glen Douglas of Phoenixville, PA; two sisters: Lorene Shea of Ft. Collins, CO and Mary Frances Van Voorhis of Champaign, IL; and three grandchildren: Neal Hancock , Craig Hancock and Samuel Raymond. He was preceded in death by four brothers, three sisters and his parents.
Don was a veteran of the United States Navy, where he achieved the rank of Seaman First Class and served during WWII aboard the USS California. He was a retired field representative for Butler Manufacturing. Don was a member of the Hindsboro United Methodist Church and the Hindsboro American Legion Post #194, where he served as past commander and placed flags on veterans’ graves for over sixty years. He enjoyed mowing, camping, playing guitar, and entertained the readers of the Oakland Independent with his weekly column.
Visitation will be held Sunday, September 14, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Krabel Funeral Home in Oakland. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 15, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hindsboro United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Van Voorhis Cemetery. For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army or the Hindsboro United Methodist Church.
