Obituary for Don Fidler
Don L. Fidler, age 87, of rural Jewett, IL, passed Saturday morning, May 21, 2022, at his home with his children and dog by his side, following a two-week hospitalization. Don was born at home in rural Paris, IL, on June 29, 1934. He was the second of five children born to Arthur A. Fidler and Martha Alice (Stickler) Fidler. He is survived by his children: Donna (Tim) Battershell of Champaign, IL, Dianne (Monte) Wilcoxon of Philo, IL, and Doug (Lori Loop) Fidler of Charleston, IL; grandchildren: Brian (Kimi) Wilcoxon of Tallahassee, FL, Jason (Sarah) Wilcoxon of Springfield, MO, Denver (Dustin) Biggs of Bushnell, IL, and Brodie (Emily) Fidler of Mattoon, IL; great-grandchildren: Cash Biggs, Ellie Mae Biggs and Baby Biggs expected in July, and his Australian Shepherd, Ruby. He is also survived by four siblings: Ed (Dorothy, dec.) Fidler of Arcola, IL, Marilyn (Bruce) Weatherford of Tuscola, IL, Bert (Carol, dec.) Fidler of Hindsboro, IL, and George (Marlys, dec.) Fidler of Hindsboro, IL, a cousin: Rosemary (Jim, dec.) Trower of Mattoon, IL, who grew up with them, and many nieces and nephews and their families. Don graduated from Arcola High School in 1952 and later obtained an Illinois Teacher Certificate to teach welding. A life-long farmer, Don also worked several jobs including welding tanks, at Progress Industries in Arthur, Blaw-Knoxx in Mattoon, and teaching welding in Decatur. He was a member of the Ashmore Masonic Lodge #390 A.F. & A.M. and was also a Shriner. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed his firepit. In accordance with Don’s wishes, he was cremated, and the family will hold a private service at a later date. For those who wish, memorials may be made in Don’s honor to Shriners Hospital for Children.
