Arthur Roy Bart, age 82, of rural Oakland, IL died Friday, May 24, 2024 at his home.
Art was born December 28, 1941 in Springfield, IL to Camille and Mary (Hock) Bart, the youngest of seven children. He married Jennie (Richno) Whitmore on September 9, 1967. She preceded him in death in 2014.
He is survived by seven children: Michael Whitmore (Tom Penrose), Debra Laager (Denny), Tim Whitmore (Brenda), Jennie Curtis, Willie Whitmore (Jeannie), Christina Vedder (Rick Northrop), and Belinda Clifton (Jim); and one sister, Irma Ziebell. Art is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Jackie Whitmore; his parents; four brothers and one sister.
Art served in the United States Air Force in the 170th tactical fighter squadron. At the age of 26, he married the love of his life and her seven children. He became their father and considered them his own. They went on to have one more child. He worked for several years as an automotive mechanic and later opened his own service station in Cantrall, IL. The family moved to Oakland in 1975 when Art began working as a high voltage electrician at Zeigler Coal Mine in Murdock. He spent his career in the coal mine, going to college at the age of 50 to complete a certification in maintenance.
Art and Susie (Jennie’s family nickname) owned a farm in Yellowhammer over the Embarrass River where they raised cattle, pigs, horses, goats, dogs, chickens… nearly anything that a farm could hold. He loved to seine and run bank lines along the river. He was an avid hunter and truly knew anything there was to know about guns and ammo. Art and Susie rode Harley Davidsons (no other motorcycle would do) throughout their lives. Harley, Ford, black powder, family, bottom shelf beer, and friends were his passions. He was a great story teller and never met a stranger. Art had a quick wit and a one-liner for any situation. He deeply loved his friends and was always up for a good time. If ever there was a person who embodied “work hard, play harder”, it was Art Bart.
