Obituary for Allen "Red" W Hanna
Allen “Red” Hanna, age 89 of Brocton, passed away at 10:28 AM, Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at the Veterans Administration Health Care System in Danville. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, August 15 at Standard Funeral Home in Oakland, with Reverend Virgil Haynes officiating. Burial will be at Payne Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Robert Willoughby Post 977 Brocton, Illinois and Veterans of Foreign Wars Sgt. C. W. Clement Post 3637 Oakland, Illinois. Friends may call after 1:00 on Friday at Standard Funeral Home in Oakland, where family will be present for visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Friday evening. Red was born on June 20, 1920 in Paris, Illinois, the son of Raymond and Elsie Weber Hanna. He attended school at Bell Ridge Country School and Paris, before starting high school in Brocton. His formal education ended when the Depression forced him to quit school as a junior, and join the Civilian Conservation Corps. As a member of the CCC Forestry Department, he planted trees. In July of 1942, at the outbreak of World War II, Red was drafted by the United States Army. After completing his training, he was assigned as a mechanic, serving in Missouri, Nebraska, Arizona, Tennessee, New Jersey, and Ireland. His unit was also mobilized to Omaha Beach, and through France, Germany, Belgium, and Luxembourg. Following the war, Red came back to Brocton, where he owned and operated Hanna’s Garage for over 50 years, drove a school bus for Brocton and Shiloh for over 40 years, and served as the village fire chief and water superintendent in Brocton. On February 26, 1954 he married Geneive Geiling in Indiana. Survivors include his wife Geneive Hanna of Brocton; three daughters, Janice Kay Lieb and husband Harold of Monticello, Joyce Elaine Metz and husband Fred of Chatham, and Jeri Lee Grafton and husband Randy of Hume; seven grandsons; two great-granddaughters; two great grandsons; and two sisters, Elnora Felkner of Caulfield, MO and Ruth Hall of Brocton. Red was a member of the Brocton Christian Church, the American Legion Robert Willoughby Post 977 Brocton, Illinois, the Oakland Masonic Lodge, and was Embarrass
