Obituary for Alice Joan Hartke
Alice Joan Hartke, age 86, of Oakland, IL, formerly of Mattoon, passed away due to COVID-19 on June 3, 2020 at Charleston Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Charleston, IL. Joan was born May 14, 1934 in Brocton, IL, to Owen and Ettoil (St. Clair) Coon. She married Gene Hartke on January 22, 1964. He preceded her in death in 2015. Joan and Gene owned and operated the Crystal Club in Effingham from 1955 to 1986. Many people have fond memories of the live music, dancing, and time spent with friends at the Crystal. Joan enjoyed decorating, working in her yard, and being with her family, especially to watch the grandkids’ ballgames. Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers: Jack and Jim Coon; two sisters: Kathryn Chamberlain and Mary Ann Richey; and a grandson: Jared Southworth. She is survived by two children: Kim (Bob) Southworth of Oakland, IL; and Kurt (Cheryl) Hartke of Mahomet, IL; two sisters: Norma Neese of Mattoon, IL; and Marcella Shoemaker of Decatur, IL; five grandchildren: Austin, Payton, and Nathan Hartke of Bloomington, IL; Michael (Katie) Southworth of Tuscola, IL; Nikki (Stephen) Guerrero of Oakland, IL; three sisters-in-law: Linda Hartke of Florida; Lila Gibbon of Effingham, IL; Linda (Martin) Hutmacher of Teutopolis, IL; a brother-in-law: Roy (Sylvia) Hartke of Effingham, IL; nine great-grandchildren: Logan, Owen, Carly and Ally Southworth of Brownsburg, IN; Tristan, Noah, and Haley Southworth of Tuscola, IL; Preston Bancroft and Ophelia Guerrero of Oakland, IL. A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 13, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Oakland Cemetery. For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
